Dog at the foot of the bed
contributed by T
Growing up, our family always had one or
two dogs around. Ususally they were strays, or animals some relative or
friend was trying to "get rid of". My mom has always had a soft spot for
animals.
At some point we inherited Dillon, or Dillie
as he was usually called. He was an older dog, that came from a someone
who lived down by Long Pond. He was pretty threadbare, and didn't have
many teeth because he liked to chase rocks. (yes, chase rocks)
Dillie, at some point decided my bed was
the best in the house. Therefore, he would climb upstairs every night with
a distinct creak of stair, thud of paw and clatter of nails. (If you have
a dog and hardwood floors, you know the sound I mean) Then a production
of jumping up onto the end of the bed and settling heavily on my warm feet.
Well, as dogs do, Dillie had to leave us
one day., and passed on.
But one night, I was lying in bed in the
dark, I heard the clatter of him coming up the steps one at a time, then
felt the bedsprings creak as he settled down on the end of the bed.
To this day, years later, my father says
he will still hear Dillie climbing the stairs at night, going up to my
old room.
